Sunday lunch was held at the Lord Nelson, Winthorpe. 15 members came along. We were seated all together and had a lovely meal and enjoyed each other’s company. Two of the members joined us for their first event with the club. Everyone made them welcome and we look forward to seeing them at future events. …

Well the balls and tinsel have been packed away, the old acquaintance have been forgot (or forgotten if you wish to be grammatically accurate) and won’t be brought to mind, so this can mean only one thing, a brand new year and a brand new season of events in the Mazda MX5 Owners club calendar.
On Sunday 22nd January 2017, in a chilled but sunny Swansea Sainsbury’s car park, members of the South Wales Branch gathered together with a token watchdog to set out on the first run of the New Year.
It was great to see such an impressive turn out so early in the year for the club with the “usuals” turning up alongside some recent new friends and also brand new faces coming along for the day. It’s hoped that all went to expectation for the “Newbies” today and they will be back for more as the months progress.
This run was organised by Jen and Andy, starting slightly later than usual on the day. Boasting an excellent turnout of 24 of the little Japanese warriors and their owners the group made an initial “roof off” short hop to Bracelet Bay in the Mumbles, the roads being quite busy for a Sunday morning.
A 10 minute appreciation of the views had us running back to the cars for the second leg and on to Oxwich Bay to visit the tucked away and out of sight Oxwich Bay Hotel. On such a clear day the views from here were tremendous with jet skiers taking to the sea and making the most of the weather and the relatively calm waters, numerous visitors also taking to the beaches to grab some winter sunshine. Is this a sign that spring is around the corner we ask ourselves?
What a lovely venue too for our first stop, finished to a very high standard inside, the welcoming open fires throughout the building and the hot cups of chocolate with rocky mountain sweets to the side offered up much resistance to our “en masse” vehicular return. But it is run day so after an hour or so it was back to it and back on the road…..but yep, what a lovely place this hotel is and I think all of those in attendance will agree. Maybe a future option for our Christmas lunch perhaps?
The final section took us through some of the finest A&B roads that the Gower has to offer and at all times the weather remained fine, allowing us to enjoy the little car to its true potential.
On the back of the Oxwich Bay Hotel our main carvery format meal was at the very Grand Manor Park Country House, Clydach. First impressions of the venue are superb, with fabulous greenery to the grounds and an actual wedding ceremony taking place on the day.
Following an excellent carvery meal we had the usual Co-ordinators informational speech and then a social wind down around the tables, bringing to conclusion a very successful first run of the year. Again sincere thanks to Jen and Andy for their efforts and putting on an excellent run for us to enjoy.
On a personal note the run went more successfully than the coinciding run last year. Those of you that went last time may remember our trip being cut very short as our long departed Mk 2.5 (Fay) gave up the ghost. She kindly sprayed the car park with power steering fluid, and that was that! Happier times second time around thankfully.

WESSEX XMAS LUNCH 2016 Wilf & I arrived early for the Xmas Lunch at the Remedy Oak Golf Club. Good job that we did as it took quite a while sorting out the Xmas cards we had taken to give. Fortunately there was a notice board with all guests names written up. “Now which table …

Twas the night before Christmas (ish) and all was silent…except for the roar of Japanese engines set in small, prolific, iconic roadsters, making their way on the “short hop” scenic route from Sarn to Swansea. Yes it’s here, the 2016 South Wales MX5 Owners club Christmas run. The one we’ve been waiting for, the one …
